Dominique Keller (Bangladesh - Secure livelihoods)

CUSO-VSO is available to comment about development issues and international volunteering.

"To say that foreign aid can be bad is not controversial. But to say that all aid is harmful risks throwing the baby out with the bathwater, along with malarial drugs, microcredit projects, schooling for girls, and sustainable farming techniques."

- Derek Evans, Executive Director of CUSO-VSO.

Key facts on CUSO-VSO

  • CUSO-VSO is an international development organization that works through volunteers. It was created from the merger of two Canadian development agencies – CUSO (est. 1961) and VSO Canada (est. 1995). We have sent some 15,000 volunteers abroad since 1961.

  • We promote volunteering to fight global poverty and disadvantage. Instead of sending money, food or clothes, we send people from a range of professions.

  • Our volunteers come from many professional backgrounds, and many ages. We recruit volunteers from Canada and the United States.

  • CUSO-VSO is one of the largest independent volunteer-sending agencies in North America. We are the North American member of the VSO International Federation, the world’s largest volunteer-sending development agency.

  • CUSO-VSO volunteers work in over 40 countries throughout Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • We do long-term development rather than short-term emergency relief. We respond to needs identified by our partnerships with local government agencies, non-governmental organizations and local community groups.
