South Africa condom supply increased for World Cup

25/02/2010

South Africa is to enlarge its supply of condoms to cater for the number of tourists descending on the country, mindful of the party atmosphere the tournament can bring.

Around 5.7 million South Africans are estimated to carry HIV and AIDS - the largest such number in the world according to the UN AIDS Agency - and preparations are being made to prevent spreading the virus further, reports AFP.

Victor Ramathesele, general medical officer for South Africa's 2010 organising committee, explained: "There's going to be a spirit of festivity and … there could be a more than usual demand for measures such as condoms."

Chairman of FIFA's medical committee, Michel D'Hooghe said preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS was a high priority of football's governing body, alongside targeting tuberculosis and malaria.

The South Africa 2010 World Cup kicks off in Johannesburg on the 11 June 2010, when the host country will take on Mexico.
