China's education reform 'has room for improvement'

04/03/2010

The latest education reform in China needs to be improved, an academic has suggested.

Professor Xiong Bingqi, writing for China.org, said that although the revised National Outline for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development showed "some consensus" regarding the most contentious issues, the proposals didn't quite do enough.

He explained: "It does not show clear and well-defined reform measures for the major issues of education development," before adding it had "much room for improvement".

Professor Bingqi stated that such advancement would have to include a wider understanding of the education budget across society and the implementation of compulsory education for all.

Deeper public appreciation of the modern college system and knowledge on reform methods were also crucial, he added.

In January, research undertaken by a team at University College London's Centre for International Health and Development found that the health of Chinese children was being threatened by stress at school.
